The Geomag manual says that just fourteen rods can fit around a sphere (valency). Intriguing, I wonder if there is any reason for that?

This is s slightly controversial point: some say "its because 15 cannot fit" others (KH is in this camp) think that fourteen is one of the natural numbers that fall out of this type of geometry.
